Question:How do I print my Career Plan?
Answer:The Career Plan document is presented as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file and can be printed from any computer equipped with the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. In the upper left corner of the PDF browser there is a small printer icon that you can "click". If you prefer, you may also use the "Print" command found in the "File" drop-down menu.

Question:How do I use CareerZone to apply for a job?
Answer:
CareerZone is primarily a career information delivery system. For those users interested in finding a job we provide a link to another Department of Labor service, America's Job Exchange (AJE). You can access AJE by clicking the "Jobs in New York" button on the occupation description page. This will replace the occupational information with a list of current New York State job openings, for that occupation. Selecting a job from this list will open a new window with additional information about the job opening. On this page you will find a button labeled "Apply Now!" Click this button and follow the instructions carefully. The CareerZone website cannot process or forward any application materials sent to us. For additional job search tools please go directly to AJE at http://www.americasjobexchange.com.

Question:I have an old CD-Rom version of CareerZone. How can I get an updated copy?
Answer:Unfortunately, CareerZone is no longer available as a CD-ROM product. In today's economy, information changes so rapidly that it was impossible to keep the CD-ROMs up to date. If the CDs become available again we will mention it on the website.

Question:I have never heard of these college majors used in CareerZone. I know of a college that offers that major, but it does not appear on your list
Answer:
CareerZone organizes school programs using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) structure developed by the U.S. Department of Education. CareerZone translates these CIP codes into common language college majors to find colleges in New York State that offer these programs. Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) maintains the database that the CareerZone system uses to find colleges at www.NYMentor.edu. We have no control over the colleges they list, or the information they provide.

Question:I know someone who makes more (or less) than you indicate in the wage section. When are you going to update?
Answer:
The wage data is the latest information available from the New York State Department of Labor. The numbers are the result of a statewide survey that must be collected, analyzed, and shared with the federal government before it can be released to the public. This is a time consuming process, but ensures we provide the highest quality data available. Because wages vary by location and experience, we display a wage range bounded by the average of the lowest paid workers (entry wage) and the highest paid workers (experienced wage). There will of course be individual earning above and below our stated range but the figures we supply are an accurate representation of what most people in these occupations earn.

Answer:The six career clusters correspond to the six career majors used by the New York State Education Department. Occupations are placed into clusters based on the type of educational preparation necessary to pursue them.

Answer:
CareerZone is a product of the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and is maintained by a team of people. No individual author credit is necessary. When citing CareerZone in a paper use New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) as the author. You can find out more about the team, and our practices, by following the "About This Site" and "Privacy Statement" links found at the bottom of our main page (www.nycareerzone.org). The data in CareerZone is continuously updated varying from real time job searches to annual site overhauls. Because the various types of information in the system have different update schedules, we generally recommend you use the date accessed format for citations.

Question:Why can't I see everything on the screen?
Answer:
If you cannot see the entire screen, without using scroll bars, your monitor is probably set at too low a resolution for the CareerZone version you have chosen. The recommended resolutions for each version can be found on our main page at careerzone.ny.gov. PC users can maximize their available browser space, without permanently changing the resolution, by pressing the F11 keyboard key; this will hide most of the browser toolbars creating more viewable space. Pressing F11 a second time will bring the toolbars back.

Question:Why isn't "occupation XYZ" listed CareerZone?
Answer:The occupations listed in CareerZone are pulled from a database of the most frequently occurring occupations in the United States. This means that if there are relatively few people in a particular field, it may have been omitted in favor of a more common one. The occupation you are looking for may also be listed under an alternate name, or included as part of a more general category (e.g. surgeon instead of orthopedic surgeon).
